A senior living community in Southwest Portland has grown.

Parkview is a 10-story building now open at Terwilliger Plaza, at 575 S.W. Sheridan St. Walsh Construction built the $105 million expansion for the Terwilliger Plaza nonprofit. Other project team members included LRS Architects and PAE. Crews broke ground in May 2021.

鈥淭o see Parkview finally rise into the sky is so rewarding,鈥 LRS Architects principal Chuck Archer stated in a press release. 鈥淭his project was years in the making, well before the first shovels went in the ground.鈥

LRS designed the expansion with a focus on providing interconnectedness throughout the existing campus, the firm stated in the release. The 370,000-square-foot concrete structure holds 127 independent living apartments and connects to the existing campus through a new steel sky-bridge.

鈥淭he Parkview expansion and the iconic sky-bridge is a point of pride for the Terwilliger community, a credit to Portland鈥檚 commitment to the environment and its senior population, challenging preconceived notions of senior living, and taking a leadership position in the senior living industry,鈥 Terwilliger Plaza President and CEO Ryan Miller stated in the release.

Parkview, designed to Passive House design standards, is projected to achieve a 42 percent reduction in energy consumption compared to average senior living buildings of comparable size.

鈥淭hese high-value, vibrant homes consume a fraction of the energy compared to average compliance standards and we are thrilled to be a part of this impactful project for our neighbors at Terwilliger Plaza,鈥 Walsh Construction senior project manager Craig Leonnig stated.

The expansion is anticipated to be the largest certified Passive House structure on the West Coast, and the largest certified Passive House senior living building in the country.

鈥淏y achieving Passive House goals, the project showcases how these principles balance cost, energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term carbon savings,鈥 PAE principal Ruwan Jayaweera stated.
