Architect

Mackenzie is pleased to share the strategic hire of architect Brian Hjelte. He brings 33 years of experience in architectural design and project management. Hjelte has worked both for design firms and for a general contractor as a project manager. This experience informs his holistic view of how projects are successfully designed and constructed.

Hjelte has designed projects for higher education institutions across Oregon, including Oregon Health and Science University, Oregon State University, and Eastern Oregon University. This work has included a broad spectrum of uses and space, from laboratory facilities and research space to the preservation of historic campus buildings.

This is actually Hjelte鈥檚 second stint with the firm; his first began in 1990, when the company was known as Mackenzie/Saito and Associates. He has immediately made an impact with the department鈥檚 public team and is already embedded in several business development initiatives.

If you had not chosen your current profession, what profession would you choose and why? United States Marine Corps. My father served in the USMC and is a retired firefighter. The opportunity to serve your country only comes once. It was a tough decision when I finished high school, but I鈥檝e never looked back.

What was a recent (or favorite) vacation you took? Hawaii (Oahu). One of my favorite places in the world! I Iove the climate, the culture, the ocean, and the outdoor activities.

What do you do when you want to relax? Coach soccer, mountain bike, and vacation with my family.

Favorite book (or movie, band or pop culture item, etc.): 鈥淔ord vs Ferrari.鈥� I鈥檓 a bit of a history nerd, and a strategist.
