They were specifically designed to serve Black community members and veterans in Portland’s King neighborhood who have been affected by gentrification and rising housing costs. The buildings will be two blocks from each other, at 506 N.E. Alberta St. and 4957 N.E. Eighth Ave.

The Herndon Building will provide 21 family-size units and outdoor recreation space. The Knauls Building will provide 31 units for veterans, including 25 for Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers. The housing units include studios, one-bedroom units, two-bedroom units, and three-bedroom units. They will be available to people making no more than 60 percent of the area median income.

Self Enhancement Inc. will offer on-site services, including school-based and after-school programs, and support for financial management. Additional support will be provided by Do Good Multnomah, a nonprofit that partners with the community to provide permanent supportive housing and low-barrier emergency shelter to houseless veterans in Portland.

SEI will also offer adult programming in parenting, credit repair, and homeownership.

The units and buildings will be energy efficient. Earth Advantage certification is being pursued.
