The city of Portland is seeking an interested person to serve a four-year term on its Design Commission. Applications for this volunteer position are due Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The Portland Design Commission provides leadership and expertise on urban design and architecture in design overlay zones throughout the city. The group supports development that builds upon context, contributes to the public realm, and provides high quality and resilient buildings and public spaces.

In addition to reviewing major developments within design overlay zones, the Design Commission recommends the establishment, amendment or removal of design overlay zones and design districts to the Planning and Sustainability Commission as well as recommends design guidelines for adoption by the Portland City Council.

To be eligible to serve on the Design Commission, one must live, play, worship, work or do business in Portland. The commission consists of seven members, none of whom can hold elective office. The commission must include: a representative of the Regional Arts and Culture Council, a representative of the public at-large, and five people experienced in urban planning, design, architecture, landscape architecture, natural resource management, sustainable building practices or land development. No more than two members may be appointed from any one of these areas of expertise.

The Regional Arts and Culture Council member is nominated by the RACC chair and approved by the mayor. The other members are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

The Design Commission usually meets at 1:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month, at 1900 S.W. Fourth Ave. Most meetings are between four and six hours each.

Design Commission members are considered public officials, which means that they must serve fairly and ethically. Training will be provided upon appointment.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 19. Application information and materials are available at .
