Workers are continuing to build Portland International Airport’s new main terminal, but it won’t open in late May as originally scheduled.

The project team saw a couple of “close calls” on the job site recently that encouraged the team to temporarily halt work, according to Vince Granato, the Port of Portland’s chief projects officer. However, no injuries occurred.

“Safety is our guiding principle at the Port of Portland, so we’re extending the PDX construction timeline to ensure that the over 900 local craftspeople working at the airport every day know their safety comes before schedule,” Granato stated in an email.

Construction was paused from Feb. 23 through Feb. 25, Port of Portland spokesperson Allison Ferre stated in an email.

“The pause gave the construction team time to rest, recuperate and refocus, and us time to start a bottoms-up look at the work, adjust the schedule where necessary and continue to put people first,” Granato stated. “We’re proud of our local construction team’s exceptional safety record as we work to bring the new PDX designs to life for our region and will share an updated opening timeline as soon as it’s finalized.”

ZGF Architects designed the main terminal improvement project for the Port of Portland. Hoffman Skanska Joint Venture is the contractor.

The main terminal will open to the public in two phases. The first, originally expected to finish in May, will include new check-in stations, a garden, new stores and restaurants, a mezzanine, security checkpoints, and the new roof. The connector between concourses B/C and D/C will return during this phase as well.

The second phase, set to begin immediately after completion of the first, will include construction of new exit lanes, a lounge, restrooms, and a second group of concessions. Also, the final roof pieces will be installed above those areas. Finally, temporary bypasses will be closed and removed before the project wraps up in 2025.

Ferre stated that work is continuing, and the port anticipates being able to share a timeframe for completion of the first phase by the end of March.
